Hyundai pumps out some swanky vehicles, but if you're snooping around the streets, the Tucson mid-size SUV is the one you'll spot the most, and not just because of its name being on everybody's lips. Let's see what makes this baby so popular: we're diving in with the fresh new hybrid model, dressed in front-wheel drive.

What sets the Tucson apart from other Hyundais? Could it be the golden trio of comfort, space, and an affordable price tag? Well, this 4.52-meter-long workhorse, fitting snugly between compact and mid-size classes, comes with a starting price of 35,740 euros - not bad, considering it includes a peppy 160-horsepower gasoline engine, a slew of displays, LED headlights, navigation, parking sensors, rearview camera, and a European-inspired design that won't make you cringe upon first glance.

Our test drive this time wasn't the base model, though. Hyundai's got a juicy bit of news: the top-of-the-line 252-horsepower hybrid can now be paired with front-wheel drive, making it a more budget-friendly option. The all-wheel-drive model will set you back at least 49,800 euros, but the front-wheel-drive version starts at 44,690 euros - yes, even the base "Select" trim. But is the front-wheel-drive worth it, considering the substantial power? Let's find out.

Traction: A Limiting Factor in the Front-Wheel-Drive PHEV

Traction can get tight in the front-wheel-drive hybrid when the system's 367 Newton meters of torque are dumped on the front wheels. It's not like you're constantly gunning it at stoplights, but even a confident low-speed overtaking maneuver can leave you feeling a tad wrestled in the steering wheel. However, it's worth noting that the drive works just fine in everyday situations, without making a kerfuffle. Smooth shifting is the norm, thanks to the six-speed automatic transmission - no abrupt interruptions here, even if we're not fans of the dual-clutch that creates softer transitions sometimes.

Plug In and Drive Away

You know the drill: go electric whenever you can. Ideally, with green energy. You can't bank much of it (13.8 kWh), but the battery can be charged in less than two hours with a 7.2 kW charger, provided you have one nearby. The electric range is satisfactory at 70 kilometers. Thanks to the potent 98-horsepower electric motor and 304 Newton meters of torque, the thrust isn't shabby, even if the results aren't quite drama-free when both engines are in play. The gasoline engine is still needed to hit the top speed of 186 km/h.

One-Stop Comfort and Utility Champion

Comfort. The seats are comfortable, and optional adaptive suspension with a touch of Poland Spring in the damping abilities makes the Tucson a versatile long-hauler.Interior and Style. The cabin sports a generous helping of tech features, and the 2025 model comes loaded with upgrades aimed at enhancing comfort and user experience without leaving you feeling like you're living in an outdated spaceship[4].Space. The Tucson doesn't skimp on space, with ample room for passengers and cargo. With the rear seats folded down, the cargo volume is a neat 1721 liters, and even with the seats up, there's still nearly 600 liters. The gasoline engine holds the edge in towing capacity, handling up to 1.2 tons, but don't expect to pull massive horse trailers with it[3].

Additional notes:

  • The Tucson Hybrid's popularity might also be attributable to its richly equipped powertrain options, which range from gas and hybrid engines to the classic diesel. The plug-in hybrid appeals to company car drivers for tax reasons (0.5% rule)[3].
  • Under the hood, the hybrid boasts a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor that puts out a combined output of 226 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, delivering a smooth and responsive driving experience[5].
  • Hyundai's 2025 Tucson Hybrid is a blend of practical electrification and a well-rounded compact SUV package, providing an attractive mix of fuel efficiency, refined styling, smooth power delivery, and thoughtful interior upgrades[1][3][4][5].
