Tesla Leads Dutch EV Market in 2023 and Rebounds in 2025

Tesla continues to dominate the electric vehicle (EV) market in the Netherlands, holding over 5% of the new car market share as of mid-2023[1]. The Tesla Model 3 is the leading fully electric passenger car in the country, with over 49,500 registered units, and Model Y is also among the top ten with nearly 28,400 units registered[1].

In recent developments, Tesla regained momentum in the Netherlands amid a broader surge in EV registrations in June 2025. The automaker topped the EV sales charts for the month, becoming the top-selling car brand overall in the country[2]. This comeback is attributed in part to the increased availability of the Model Y during 2025[2].

Battery-electric cars accounted for around 15.6% of the total European Union (EU) market share in the first half of 2025, indicating a growing overall EV market in which Tesla is a key player in the Netherlands[3]. European policy changes and stricter CO2 emission standards are expected to increase the EV sales share in Europe to about 25% by the end of 2025[4].

In November 2023, a total of 12,902 EVs were registered in the Netherlands, an increase of 34% year on year[5]. Tesla Model Y maintained its lead in the Dutch EV market for the first 11 months of 2023, with almost double the registrations of the runner-up[5].

Other notable performances in the Dutch EV market in November 2023 include the Volvo S/V60 PHEVs, which recorded 253 registrations, a new best in over three years in the Netherlands' EV market[5]. The MG4 ended the month in fifth place, while the Peugeot e-208 moved up to fourth place[5]. The Skoda Enyaq confirmed its popularity and its best-seller status within the Volkswagen Group[5].

When combined with PHEVs, EVs accounted for 46% of Dutch registrations in November 2023[5]. Other manufacturers saw changes in their market share, with BMW's market share increasing from 8.4% to 8.5%, Volvo's remaining at 8.4%, and Stellantis' and Volkswagen Group's decreasing from 16.1% to 15.8% and 16.1% to 15.5%, respectively[5].

As of November 2023, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 claimed the top two positions in the Netherlands' EV market, followed by the BMW i4, BMW iX1, Volvo XC40, Peugeot e-208, MG4, and the Opel Corsa EV[5]. The Kia Niro climbed to fifth place in the Netherlands' EV market for the first 11 months of 2023[5].
