Ventia Hit by ALPHV Ransomware, Key Systems Offline for Days

Ventia, a vital infrastructure services provider, succumbed to a cyberattack over the weekend of July 8 and 9. The attack, attributed to the ransomware group ALPHV (BlackCat), led to key systems being taken offline but have since been safely re-enabled.

Ventia, which serves over 400 locations across Australia, offering services like waste management, asset management, and telecommunications, experienced significant disruption. The attack impacted systems for at least three days, potentially causing substantial disruption and lost revenue.

The cyberattack comes at a time when Australia-based entities are increasingly seen as targets for ransomware-style extortion attempts. Ventia, with its extensive client base including the Western Australian government and the Department of Defence, is a high-value target. The company recently signed a AUD229 million four-year contract with the Western Australian government and a AUD393 million five-year contract with the Department of Defence.

Ventia is currently restoring its external-facing networks systematically. The company has assured that it will provide further information to customers, regulators, and enforcement agencies as it becomes available.

The cyberattack on Ventia, while causing temporary disruption, has been contained. The company's extensive client base, including the Western Australian government and the Department of Defence, may face potential impacts. As investigations continue, Ventia remains committed to transparency and restoring full services.
