Violent Combat Game: Invincible Vs Blends Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct Elements
Game On, Invincible Style: A Review of Invincible Vs
When I caught wind of a new game based on the Invincible comic series, I had a good idea of what it might look like: a superhero action-adventure, perhaps set in the comic book universe. But boy, was I wrong! Turns out, Invincible Vs is a damn fine tag-team brawler, and you better believe I'm all for it.
I got a chance to check it out after the recent Xbox Games Showcase, and lemme tell ya, this ain't your ordinary fighting game. It's easy to pick up, whether you're a fighting game pro or a newbie just dipping your toes in, which is perfect if you ask me.
Now, the devs behind Invincible Vs have a pretty impressive resumé – the team that brought us Killer Instinct and a whole lot of fighting game goodness has returned, and they've brought the magic with them.
The basic concept is simple: you've got 2D fighting action where you tag your team of three heroes in and out on the fly. If you're thinking of Marvel vs Capcom, well hell, that's sorta where my head was at too, but there's a whole lot more to it than that. See, this game's got a system that reminds me of a well-oiled machine, perfectly in sync, whether you're juggling attacks or lining up special moves.
At its core, the combat is pretty straightforward: pressing the four face buttons handles basic attacks, and you can pull off grabs or counters by pressing buttons together. But don't think for a second that it's all just easy peasy. The team's built a combo system that's easy to pick up but hard to master. You just smash the light attack, and boom, you're pulling off something that's downright cool. You don't need to memorize a ridiculous series of moves to look like a boss.
But hey, if you've got the skills – and more importantly, the patience – you can get the game to do some truly amazing things. With the right timing, you can cancel out big attacks and trick your opponents into giving you an openings. Believe me, there's plenty of balance between offense and defense here, making for fights that are intense and exciting.
Oh, and let's not forget – these fights get brutal real quick. Think Mortal Kombat levels of violence, with characters getting straight up beheaded and levels deteriorating as the fight goes on. It ain't a friendly sparring match, it's about two people fighting for their lives – or at least that's the vibe I got.
All in all, I'm pumped to dive back in and see just how deep this game goes. On the surface, it feels a bit more casual, but I can't help but sense that there's more to it. For instance, it sounds like there's an original narrative story mode coming that's set in the Invincible comics universe. If they can deliver on that, combine it with some seriously fun fighting, and give us some high-flying aerial combos and dynamic team synergy, Skybound Games might just have a blood-soaked hit on their hands.
Invincible Vs launches in 2026 for Xbox Series X/S and PC. You better believe I'll be there, ready to rumble.
This new game, Invincible Vs, showcases more than just typical fighting game mechanics with its tag-team brawler style and intuitive controls, which makes it an intriguing gadget to try, featuring advanced technology for seamless combat and dynamic team synergy. As a fan of both Invincible and Killer Instinct, I eagerly anticipate immersing myself in the game's depth, especially with the additional layer of storytelling in the upcoming narrative mode.
