Vodafone Ghana Hit by Chinese Hackers: Salt Typhoon's Global Cyberattack

Vodafone Ghana has fallen victim to a cyberattack by the Chinese hacking collective Salt Typhoon. The group has been actively targeting phone and wireless providers globally since February 2023.

Salt Typhoon has shifted its strategy to broadly target potentially vulnerable devices worldwide. The group has compromised network hardware at internet addresses owned by telecommunications companies, communicating with their systems. In this case, the compromised device associated with an MTN internet address was located in Ghana.

The ultimate goal of the hackers is to use initial access as a launchpad to pivot into the sensitive internal core of telecommunications networks. So far, the group has successfully penetrated devices that offer paths into organizations' networks, affecting seven telecommunications companies including Comcast, MTN Group, LG Uplus, and now Vodafone. The compromised devices likely belong to the companies' clients, not the companies themselves. This means the security of countless individuals and businesses could be at risk.

US officials previously accused Salt Typhoon of a broad cyber-espionage campaign targeting telecommunications companies and prominent politicians in November 2022.

The hacking incident highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures for telecommunications companies and their clients. As these networks are foundational to modern society, any compromise can directly impact the everyday lives of citizens. Vodafone Ghana and other affected companies are urged to investigate and mitigate the breach promptly.
