WhatsApp Shuts Down Over 980,000 Accounts in India in June Over THIS Specific Cause
In a move to maintain a safe and secure platform, WhatsApp has banned over 98 lakh accounts in India in June 2025. This action is part of the company's ongoing efforts to prevent abuse and harmful activities.
WhatsApp's three-stage abuse detection system is constantly vigilant. It monitors account creation, messages being sent, and responds to negative feedback such as user reports and blocks. When complaints are received—23,596 in June 2025—the company reviews them and takes action either to ban offending accounts or restore those wrongly banned. Most complaints relate to ban appeals, and WhatsApp took action on 756 accounts based on such appeals.
In addition to these measures, WhatsApp also adjusts its enforcement to comply with local regulations, such as those set by India's telecom authorities. This means some bans may also result from adherence to India-specific rules on content and conduct. The bans typically target accounts involved in spam, scams, or the distribution of harmful content.
WhatsApp has introduced two new features to enhance user experience: 'Status Ads' and 'Promoted Channels'. Status Ads function similarly to Instagram Story ads, allowing business accounts to post paid content in users' Status updates. Details about the functionality of Promoted Channels were not provided in the report. These new features were available to select beta users on Android, according to WABetaInfo.
WhatsApp emphasizes prevention as its primary focus in stopping harmful activity. The company collaborates with experts to promote cybersecurity and protect election integrity. This proactive approach is a testament to WhatsApp's commitment to providing a safe and secure platform for its users.

Technology advances on social-media platforms like WhatsApp can now include entertainment elements, such as the new 'Status Ads' feature that allows business accounts to post paid content in users' Status updates. This form of advertising is similar to Instagram Story ads. On the other hand, the enforcement of WhatsApp's regulations, particularly in India, extends to banning accounts that violate local rules regarding content and conduct on social-media, in addition to those involved in spam, scams, or distributing harmful content.
