Windows 7 Market Share Surges to Nearly 5% in 2025, Likely Due to Measurement Errors

In an unexpected turn, Windows 7's market share has surged to nearly 5% in 2025, five years after Microsoft ended mainstream support. This resurgence, however, may not be due to a large-scale migration but rather measurement errors, according to experts.

Windows 7, released in 2009, initially saw a decline in users after Microsoft ended its support in 2020. Most users migrated to Windows 10. However, recent data from StatCounter shows a spike in Windows 7's usage, reaching 9.61% in September 2025, up from 3.59% a month ago.

Experts doubt this increase is due to users switching back from Windows 10 or 11. Instead, they attribute it to measurement errors. Despite this, the resurgence has raised eyebrows, given Windows 7's age and lack of security updates.

Meanwhile, Windows 11's market share has stagnated at around 48%, and Windows 10's share has dropped to 40%. The upcoming end of support for Windows 10 in two weeks has not prompted a significant number of users to upgrade to Windows 11, indicating user rejection.

While the reasons behind Windows 7's apparent resurgence remain unclear, it's crucial to remember that using Windows 7 in 2025 is not recommended due to its age, lack of security updates, and compatibility issues. Users are advised to upgrade to supported versions like Windows 10 or Windows 11 for better security and performance.
