Wylie Co.'s Experience with Mocha Pro in The Last of Us's Motion Tracking Venture

In the world of high-quality television production, visual effects (VFX) play a crucial role in creating immersive and believable environments. HBO's The Last of Us is no exception, with Wylie Co. contributing significantly to the series' VFX.

Wylie Co., the in-house VFX team for The Last of Us, employed Mocha Pro, a planar tracking and visual effects software, to facilitate complex tracking, roto, and object removal work needed for the show's VFX shots. Mocha Pro's advanced tracking capabilities helped Wylie Co. create seamless visual effects elements that integrated convincingly into the live-action footage.

The team used Mocha Pro alongside Foundry Nuke for visual effects work. Wylie Co.'s VFX supervisor, Joel Silva, managed over 300 final effect shots created by the team. These shots included CG animals, set extensions, plate restoration, blue screen extractions, and matte paintings.

Mocha Pro's PowerMesh tracking was particularly useful for shots involving moving people, lots of parallax, and occlusions. One such example can be found in the last shot of the series, where Mocha Pro was used to handle a complicated handheld camera move, adding a mountain range digital matte painting behind Ellie in a pickup truck.

Jacob Maymudes, CEO and chief creative officer of Wylie Co., stated that they prefer to use Mocha Pro over the planar tracker in Nuke. This preference is evident in the efficient and high-quality VFX work produced by Wylie Co. for The Last of Us.

For artists looking to get their start in visual effects, Maymudes advises starting with the basics, such as Photoshop, After Effects, or Blender, to discover their skillset. He also encourages experimentation, suggesting that artists grab a camera, film something, and experiment with the footage.

While Wylie Co. worked tirelessly on The Last of Us, there is no information available about their work on other productions, such as Dune. However, it is clear that their work on The Last of Us demonstrates their expertise in VFX and their ability to deliver high-quality results under pressure.

As the visual effects industry continues to grow and evolve, it is likely that Wylie Co. will continue to be at the forefront, using innovative software like Mocha Pro to push the boundaries of what is possible in VFX.

Wylie Co. leveraged data-and-cloud-computing technology for efficient visual effects work, as shown by their preference for Mocha Pro over Nuke's planar tracker. The team's VFX supervisor, Joel Silva, managed a wide range of VFX shots using advanced technology, including CG animals, set extensions, and digital matte paintings.
