YouTube Introduces Automated Video Dubbing in Users' Native Languages
In an exciting development, YouTube has rolled out its multi-language audio feature to millions of creators, aiming to help them tap into a broader global audience. This feature, which was first tested in 2023 with notable creators like MrBeast, Mark Rober, and chef Jamie Oliver, has shown promising results.
The pilot programme, powered by Google's Gemini AI technology, involved over 3,500 videos in more than 40 languages. Early tests demonstrated significant successes, with Jamie Oliver's channel tripling its viewership after adding dubbed tracks.
The multi-language audio feature offers creators the flexibility to manage their dubs through YouTube Studio on desktop. They can review or disable automatic dubbing before it goes live, or they can opt for manual dubbing with custom voiceovers. For those who prefer automation, YouTube's feature mimics the creator's voice and emotions for more natural-sounding translations.
The automatic dubbing currently translates English videos into Japanese, Hindi, Spanish, and Korean. However, more languages are expected to be added to automatic dubbing in the future.
For viewers, the multi-language audio feature opens up more content as they can skip subtitles and listen to translated audio. They can switch between the original and dubbed audio anytime from the video's settings menu.
Users can manage their multi-language audio tracks in the Content tab. Here, they can preview, publish, unpublish, or delete audio tracks. If they prefer to approve dubs first, they can turn on Manually review dubs before publishing. Alternatively, they can enable automatic dubbing for all future uploads by toggling Allow automatic dubbing in Settings > Upload defaults > Advanced settings.
Users can review every track or just the experimental languages when manually reviewing dubs. The full rollout of the multi-language audio feature should wrap up in the next few weeks. As more creators adopt this feature, it's expected to bring a diverse range of content to viewers worldwide.
